Note: The pellet base in High Point is comprised of approx. 20% alfalfa and 25% wheat middlings - which are leftover from milling wheat, comprised of the outer skin and variable amounts of endosperm. Wheat middlings are about 15% protein and 28% starch, more details here.

High Point Daily Nutrients for Grass or Hay-Fed horses comes in both loose powder and pellet form; the amounts of each vitamin/mineral are slightly different in each – but always in the correct ratio. For the first few years, I was not feeding any other beet pulp, or pellet feed, so did not have a base to sprinkle the powder form onto. So I purchased the pellet form, which has an alfalfa base (but also contains wheat middlings - the fractional part of the wheat kernel). High Point Pellets are 20% alfalfa and 25% wheat middlings.

When my herd grew to 11 horses, it was prohibitively expensive to ship so many bags of the High Point Pellets, so I found a pure alfalfa pellet locally (no filler, grains, wheat etc) and then sprinkled the High Point powder on top of that. Chopped hay (chaff) can also work well as a base if you're avoiding all grains or pellets - I tested this with my herd and they all were happy to consume the High Point powder sprinkled on top of chopped up hay. However, it really helps to also drizzle on some flax or hemp oil to help the powder stick to the hay and not all just fall to the bottom of the dish.

When I used the High Point Pellets, I would then drizzle cold-pressed flax or hemp oil over top, add 1//2 cup blend of dried herbs, and 1 tbsp. seaweed powder. Sometimes I will include freshly ground flax seed, extra magnesium, or chia or hemp seed as well.

When I first got my wild horses, I would supplement them daily until they were no longer malnourished, deficiencies were resolved and their hooves and coats looked good. After that, I would supplement 3x/week. You should supplement your horse according to their activity level, stress, deficiencies, forage available, etc.

Too Much Iron can cause Laminitis and Cushing’s

The really key thing to watch out for with equine supplementation, is to make sure your horse is not getting too much iron. Iron has to be in the correct ratio with zinc and copper, or it contributes to laminitis, insulin resistance and equine Cushing’s disease.

When I got our hay tested, the iron level in our hay was 9x higher than zinc, and so completely out of balance with the zinc and copper. So that’s why I only use HorseTech’s High Point Grass/Hay vitamin/mineral supplement – which is formulated specifically for horses primarily fed grass and/or hay.

Note: We can also have HorseTech look at your hay analysis and create a custom-blended supplement specifically for your horse, if you wish. Email us for details: shoppe@listentoyourhorse.com
