JINI SAYS: If you're looking for a protein and amino acid supplement that also contains a small amount of good fat and some fiber - this Performance hemp meal topper is a great choice.
The hempseed is ground into a meal and most of the fat is removed, leaving an excellent source of protein and amino acids. Remember that your horse cannot get all the essential amino acids needed for building muscle, hooves and hair (mane/tail) just from grass or hay. So you have to supplement with either a legume like alfalfa, or flax seed, or hemp seed. Hemp contains ALL 10 of the essential amino acids a horse needs.
The difference between this and the Superfood Advantage is that this one is higher in protein, whereas the Advantage Hemp Meal is higher in fiber. So choose whichever is best nutritionally for your horse.
If you're wondering which one horses prefer... I tested both on 8 horses and they all preferred this Superfood Performance (higher in protein and fat) which makes sense. Many of them would eat this Superfood Performance straight, all on it's own. But all the horses would eat both when sprinkled on their feed dish.
Personally, I feed less than the amount recommended and that feels good to me - but tune into your horse's body and see what they need, which may change from day to day. Listen to your horse!
